Now all sellers can add products to the Amazon catalogue – without the need to be a Pro-merchant seller

By Sharon Fussell, November 28, 2012

This week I am the bearer of good news from Amazon, especially for those merchant sellers who haven’t subscribed as a Pro-merchant seller – and don’t wish to.

Once the preserve of Pro-merchants only, Amazon have now enabled all sellers to add products to the Amazon catalogue.

You may have noticed that many of your listings have a quality alert alongside them in your active listings. This is because that item has something missing from their product description page: this could be a description about the product or a image, or indeed other info.

To be honest, I ignore these alerts.

One: because my stock is in Amazon’s warehouse, and even if I wanted to, I could not take photographs to add an image to the site.

Two: I believe books continue to sell without these additions.

Three: it would take me forever to make changes to the 11,000 items Amazon claim need some attention.

However, adding products that you have, which aren’t on the system is another story.

Advantages to adding a product include:

  1. you can price the item in whatever way you like, as there are no competitors
  2. you’re in control of adding info such as image and search terms

You can find the link to adding products in your seller account, under ‘add a listing’.

Below is an explanation of how to do this, and there are further extensive instructions on Amazon.

Create Product Detail Pages on Amazon – without being a Pro-merchant

Amazon bosses say: ‘We’re happy to let you know that sellers on the Individual selling plan may now create new product detail pages on Amazon.co.uk. The ‘Add a Product’ tool is available in Beta to sellers who are on the Individual selling plan.’

To create a new product detail page, use the ‘Add a Product’ tool in the ‘Manage Inventory’ section of your seller account. This then allows any product detail pages you create to become a permanent part of the Amazon catalogue, to be found by customers through search and browse, ready to be bought or added to their wish list.

Additionally, you can now create brand new listings for any products that do not currently exist in the Amazon catalogue (but duplicate product pages aren’t allowed). All product pages can be completed in just a few moments, with the option of adding eight images per page. The final listing then becomes searchable within one to four days. The listing process for inventory on new product pages and existing product pages is the same, and you can edit your product details at any time.

The following categories are eligible:

  • Electronics & Photo
  • Books
  • Music
  • Video
  • DVD
  • Home & Garden
  • Toys

It’s great that anybody can now do this on Amazon, without the need to pay the Pro-merchant seller subscription fee.
